A Day Full of Rules

Speaker: Sara

Role: Office Worker

Context

Sara talks to her colleague Lisa during lunch in the break room about office requirements

Short Story

Hi Lisa. Do you have a minute? I need to talk about all these office rules. I am so tired today because I got here five minutes late. Mr. Thompson is very strict about being punctual.

Every day, I have to wake up at 6:00 AM. I have to wear formal clothes to work. My old job was easier. I could wear jeans and t-shirts there.

The rules here are different. We have to look professional all the time because of our clients. Mr. Thompson says the clients want to see a good office. I understand this, but sometimes it’s hard.

And there are more rules! We can’t make personal calls on the office phones. I have to use my mobile phone in the break room. Mr. Thompson checks everything we do.

Last week, Jane got in trouble. She was not punctual three times. Now she has to come thirty minutes early every day. That’s so strict!

I like this job, Lisa. The pay is good. The clients are nice. But sometimes I think about all the things I have to do. Do I really have to follow all these office rules? Do I have to dress like this every day?

Oh no, break time is over now. We have to go back to work. Mr. Thompson will check if we are punctual. He always stands by the door after lunch. See you later, Lisa!
