Lexical Investigation With Story
Today I want to tell you about something interesting that happened in our school last week. It’s a story about how we use ‘pick up’ in English, and it involves two of our students, Sarah and Tom.
Sarah is amazing at picking up new languages. She can learn vocabulary so quickly – it’s like she just needs to hear a word once, and she remembers it forever. Last Monday, she had to pick up her younger brother from the library, and while she was waiting, she started reading an English book. That’s when Tom arrived to pick up some study materials.
Tom noticed that Sarah was reading quite slowly at first, but then she began to pick up speed. He watched as she started to improve her reading pace. You see, Tom has been trying to acquire better reading skills himself, so he was really interested. He decided to collect some tips from Sarah about how she learns so fast.
Later that day, I saw them in the school gym. Sarah was helping Tom pick up the pace of his workout routine. It was funny because just then, Tom’s phone started ringing. He had to pick up the phone – it was his mom calling about their pickup time after school. You know, the pick-up area can get quite busy after classes!
What I love about this story is how it shows different ways we use this phrasal verb. Sometimes we pick up objects, sometimes we pick up new skills, and sometimes we pick up speed when we’re doing something. It’s amazing how one simple phrase can have so many meanings!
Since that day, I’ve noticed Tom’s English has really started to improve. He’s picking up new words every day, just like Sarah. It shows that when we help each other, we can all learn faster.
