📖 Section 1: The Story

Jim started his new job today. He went to the HR office to meet Sarah, the HR manager. Sarah wanted to explain his pay.’Welcome, Jim’ Sarah said. ‘Today I will tell you about your remuneration. This means your pay and benefits.’Jim looked confused. ‘I don’t understand my tax code,’ he said. ‘And what are NI contributions?’Sarah smiled. ‘Don’t worry. Jane from payroll will help us. She knows about the tax bracket system.’ Jane came into the office with some papers. ‘Hi Jim! Your gross pay is £2,500 per month. This means your pay before tax.”We will withhold some money for tax and NI,’ Sarah explained. ‘The company will pay you on the last day of each month.’ Jim had more questions. ‘What about my performance-related bonus?’ ‘Yes!’ Jane said. ‘We remunerate good work with extra money. Your first bonus check will come after six months.’ ‘And there is supplementary pay for weekend work,’ Sarah added. ‘We will add this to your normal pay.’ Jim remembered something else. ‘I worked two days last month for training. Will you pay me for those days?”Yes,’ Jane said. ‘Your pay will be backdated. This means we will pay you for those days too.’ Jim smiled. Now he understood his pay better. ‘Thank you both for explaining everything!
