In what can only be described as an extraordinary twist of fate, a rare orange lobster was liberated from its commercial confines this week, following its discovery by a wildlife enthusiast at a local grocery establishment. The crustacean, whimsically christened Jean-Clawed Van Damme, represents a statistical anomaly of one-in-30-million, according to assessments by Humane Long Island and the New York Aquarium, who facilitated its release.

While the sight of an orange lobster typically heralds its posthumous appearance on a dinner plate, having undergone the traditional culinary transformation, shopper Kyle Brancato did a double take upon noticing this particular specimen very much alive and moving among its more conventionally-hued counterparts at a Tops grocery store in upstate New York. 'I walked by the lobster tank, and I saw this bright orange lobster,' Brancato recounted to WHAM, a local CNN affiliate. 'Very different from all the other ones in the tank.' He surmised that other potential purchasers had passed it by, presumably mistaking its vibrant coloration for some form of affliction.

Having resolved to secure the lobster's freedom, but lacking expertise in crustacean maintenance, Brancato implemented an improvisational care strategy. 'I borrowed some tank water from Palmer's, down the road,' he explained, referencing a local establishment. 'That bought me enough time to go to Petco and acquire a 20-gallon tank, along with the requisite amount of boxed seawater, which I then temperature-regulated appropriately.'

The timing of the lobster's release into the Long Island Sound proved particularly poignant, occurring just one day prior to National Lobster Day, which traditionally marks the zenith of the annual US lobster harvesting season. While this fortunate specimen regained its liberty, thousands of its species contemporaries suffered a markedly different fate, ultimately being transformed into various culinary offerings amid seasonal promotions.

This heartening rescue echoes a similar incident from 2021, when an orange lobster was saved in Ontario by a compassionate Canadian couple. That particular crustacean had languished for weeks in a grocery store tank, where it had been held captive and apparently shunned by shoppers due to its unusual coloration. Adding to its tribulations, it was reportedly being picked on by its tank-mates, before ultimately finding sanctuary in an aquarium setting.
