Saffron: Welcome to Hair Stories, where we explore the unique relationships people have with their hair. I’m your host Saffron, and today we’re joined by Sara, who’s going to share her journey with what she calls her ‘wonderfully unruly mane.’ Sara, welcome to the show!

Sara: Thanks for having me, Saffron. It’s great to be here!

Saffron: So, Sara, let’s dive right in. Tell us about your relationship with your hair’s natural state.

Sara: Well, I’ve got what hairdressers politely call ‘highly texture-rich’ hair. It’s incredibly frizz-prone and has a mind of its own. Growing up, I struggled with it daily. My hair care regime consisted mainly of trying to tame it into submission, which never really worked.

Saffron: That must have been challenging. How did you eventually come to terms with your hair?

Sara: It was actually my hairdresser, Maria, who changed everything. She helped me understand that fighting against my hair’s natural texture was a losing battle. Instead, she taught me specific styling techniques that work with, rather than against, my hair type. Now my maintenance routine is all about enhancing rather than controlling.

Saffron: Could you share some of those techniques with our listeners?

Sara: Of course! The game-changer was learning to embrace my hair’s voluminous nature. I switched to using styling products specifically designed for unruly hair, and I started using a silk pillowcase to reduce friction at night. The key was accepting that my hair would never be stick-straight, and that’s perfectly okay.

Saffron: That’s fascinating! Let’s dig deeper into your daily hair care routine. What does that look like now?

Sara: Sure! My current routine starts with sulfate-free shampoo, followed by intensive conditioning. I’ve learned that my unruly hair actually needs more moisture, not less. I use leave-in conditioner and apply my styling products while my hair is still quite wet. Then I either air-dry or diffuse on low heat, always treating my mane with respect rather than trying to force it into submission.

Saffron: What advice would you give to others struggling with similar hair challenges?

Sara: Embrace what makes your hair unique. Understanding and working with your natural texture is so much more rewarding than fighting it. And find a hairdresser who really gets unruly hair – it makes all the difference.

Saffron: Thank you, Sara, for sharing your journey with us. Next week, we’ll be exploring the world of vintage hairstyling techniques. Until then, keep embracing your natural beauty!
