Taming the Unruly Mane

Maria reflects on a particularly challenging client consultation with Sara, sharing her professional perspective on helping clients embrace their natural hair

Short Story

You know, in my fifteen years as a hairstylist, I’ve seen countless clients struggle with their hair, but Sara’s case today really touched my heart. She walked into Curl & Style this morning, her wild black curls practically declaring war against the hairband attempting to contain them. Her usually luxuriant hair was completely disheveled, and I could tell from her expression that she’d reached her breaking point.

As she settled into my chair, her frizzy locks seemed to have a mind of their own, rebellious strands escaping in every direction. ‘I can’t take it anymore,’ she sighed, gesturing to her unruly mane. ‘It’s always tangled, constantly messy, and absolutely impossible to manage.’ The frustration in her voice was palpable as she described her morning battles with her wayward curls.

I’ve always believed that understanding your hair’s personality is half the battle. Sara’s unkempt appearance wasn’t due to neglect – quite the contrary. She’d been fighting against her hair’s natural texture, trying to force it into submission with harsh treatments and excessive heat styling. The result was a chaotic combination of different curl patterns, some areas over-processed while others remained stubbornly natural.

I took my time explaining to Sara that her hair wasn’t the enemy. ‘Your curls aren’t being difficult,’ I told her, ‘they’re just being themselves.’ We discussed how embracing her natural texture could transform her relationship with her hair. I demonstrated some specialized techniques for curly hair care, showing her how to work with her texture rather than against it.

By the end of our session, after applying appropriate products and cutting techniques specifically designed for curly hair, Sara’s transformation was remarkable. Those previously unmanageable curls had settled into beautiful, defined spirals. The smile on her face as she looked in the mirror made my day – it’s these moments that remind me why I love my profession so much.
