← Grammar Learning Center>Expressing Existence: Using Be, Exist, and Related Verbs

The Basic Concept of Existence

Building on our knowledge of possession, we now focus on how to express that something exists or is present. The most common verbs are 'be' and 'exist'. While 'have' shows ownership, these verbs show presence or existence.

Different Ways to Express Existence

There are several ways to say something exists:
– be (am/is/are)
– exist
– live (for living things)
– remain
– stay
Each has slightly different meanings but all relate to existence or presence.

Examples

There are three books on the table.Uses 'are' to show the presence of objects in a location
Dinosaurs existed millions of years ago.Uses 'existed' to talk about past existence
Many species live in the rainforest.Uses 'live' to express existence of living things in a habitat

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Incorrect: Is existing many problems.

✅ Correct: There are many problems.

Explanation: In English, we typically use 'there are/is' rather than the verb 'exist' in everyday speech

❌ Incorrect: The shop is existing since 2010.

✅ Correct: The shop has existed since 2010.

Explanation: With time periods, use present perfect for ongoing existence

Tips for Success

  • Use 'there is/are' for general existence statements
  • Choose 'live' specifically for living things
  • 'Exist' is more formal than 'there is/are'
  • Remember to match singular/plural subjects with the correct form of 'be'
