📚 Clothes and Wearing them (A2)

Summer Clothes and Beach Wear

Core PathWay

1 Dressing for Warm Weather

Summer is here and the weather is hot!

Last week we learned about winter clothes. We wore heavy coats and warm boots. But now the sun is strong and the temperature is high. We want to strip off our thick clothes. This means we want to take off heavy clothes because we feel too hot. We need light clothes for summer. Light clothes are not heavy. They feel comfortable in the heat.

We choose different materials for summer. Materials are what our clothes are made from. We want breathable clothes in summer. This means air can move through the material. The air keeps our skin cool. Cotton is a good material for hot days. Linen is also very good. These materials are lightweight. This means they are not heavy on our body.

The sun is very strong in summer. We need to protect our skin. We wear hats to protect our head and face. We wear sunglasses to protect our eyes. We choose loose clothes too. Loose clothes are not tight on our body. They let air move around our skin and keep us cool.

2 What We Wear at the Beach

The beach is a wonderful place in summer!

When we go to the beach, we wear special clothes. We wear a swimsuit or swimming costume to go in the water. This means the same thing. Men often wear swimming trunks or board shorts. These are short pants for swimming. Women wear a bikini or a one-piece swimsuit. A bikini has two parts. A one-piece swimsuit is all one piece.

We need to protect our skin from the sun at the beach. We wear a sun hat or a beach hat to protect our head. Many people wear a baseball cap too. We put on a cover-up when we finish swimming. A cover-up is light clothing we wear over our swimsuit. Some people wear a sarong. This is a long piece of material you wrap around your body. Others wear a beach dress or kaftan. These are loose and comfortable.

We wear flip-flops on our feet at the beach. Flip-flops are very simple sandals. Some people call them thongs. We can also wear beach sandals or water shoes. Water shoes protect our feet in the water and on the sand.

3 Active Summer Wear: Water Sports

Many people enjoy water sports in summer!

When you go diving, you need special clothes. You wear a wetsuit. A wetsuit keeps you warm in cold water. It fits tight on your body. You also wear a diving mask on your face. This helps you see under the water. You wear fins on your feet. Fins help you swim faster. Some people wear diving gloves to keep their hands warm.

Windsurfing is very popular in summer. People wear a wetsuit for windsurfing too. Sometimes they wear a shorty wetsuit. This wetsuit has short arms and short legs. They also wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid. This means the same thing. It helps you stay safe in the water. Many people wear a rash vest too. This is a tight shirt that protects your skin.

People who go yachting wear different clothes. They wear sailing shoes or deck shoes. These have special bottoms that don’t slip. They often wear sailing gloves to protect their hands. They wear a waterproof jacket when it rains. Some people wear sailing trousers made from quick-dry material. They always wear a life jacket when they are on the boat.

4 Cool Materials and Summer Accessories

The right materials keep us cool in summer!

Cotton and linen are the best materials for hot weather. Cotton comes from a plant. It is soft and comfortable. Linen also comes from a plant. It is very breathable and keeps you cool. Many people wear cotton T-shirts in summer. Others wear loose-fitting linen shirts. Loose-fitting means the shirt is not tight. It hangs away from your body. This lets air move around you.

We wear special accessories in summer too. A wide-brimmed sun hat is very important. Wide-brimmed means the hat has a big circle around it. This protects your face and neck from the sun. Some people wear a straw hat. Straw is a natural material that lets air through. Others wear a cotton sun hat or a linen hat.

We also wear lightweight scarves in summer. This sounds strange but a thin cotton scarf protects your neck from the sun. We wear breathable cotton socks with our sandals sometimes. We choose loose-fitting cotton dresses or flowing linen trousers. Flowing means the material moves easily when you walk. All these clothes help us stay cool and comfortable when the weather is very hot.
