New EU Border Rules: Chaos and Long Queues

Students read a B1/B2 news article about Europe's Entry-Exit System and the travel disruption it is causing at airports and border crossings this summer.

Learning objectives:
• Understand and use key vocabulary related to border control and travel disruption: entry-exit system, biometric data, Schengen zone, border crossing, queue chaos, overhaul, suspend, peak traffic, disruption, fingerprints
• Practise reported speech by converting statements from the article (e.g. Zinell said the situation was dangerous; IATA called for the system to be suspended) into natural spoken English with correct backshifting
• Use cause-and-effect connectors (as a result, due to, as, however, meanwhile) to explain the chain of events described in the article
• Express and justify opinions on the trade-off between border security and travel convenience using target vocabulary
