Short Story
Welcome to the Team
Good morning, everyone! I’m Sarah, and I’ll be your manager here at ACME Corp. First of all, welcome aboard! I know starting a new job can feel overwhelming, but don’t worryâI’m sure you’ll get used to it all in no time at all.
How Things Used to Be
Let me tell you a bit about our journey. Five years ago, ACME Corp was completely different. We used to have a very strict routine. Everyone would arrive at exactly 8:30 in the morning, and we’d all sit in the same seats every single day. Can you imagine? We used to hold three-hour meetings every Monday morningâthey were exhausting! And remote work? That didn’t exist. We weren’t used to working from home at all. Everything was in-person, five days a week, no exceptions.
Back then, our founder, Mr. Peterson, would walk around the office at 9 a.m. sharp, checking that everyone was at their desk. He’d usually bring his coffee and stop to chat, but honestly, most people found it stressful rather than friendly. We used to joke that you could set your watch by his morning rounds!
The Big Change
Then the pandemic hit in 2020, and everything changed overnight. Suddenly, we had to adapt. At first, it was chaos. None of us were used to video calls or digital collaboration tools. I remember spending hours just trying to figure out how to share my screen! Senior staff members, especially those who’d been here for decades, really struggled. They weren’t used to typing messages instead of walking over to someone’s desk.
But you know what? We became more flexible. We had no choice. People slowly got used to working remotely, and we discovered something surprisingâproductivity actually improved! Employees were happier, more balanced, and the quality of work went up.
How We Work Today
So here’s how things work now. We usually have a hybrid schedule. Most people come to the office two or three days a week, and work from home the rest of the time. You’ll get used to managing your own schedule pretty quickly. We’re very flexible these daysâif you need to work from home on a Tuesday because you have a repair person coming, just let me know.
We usually start our day with a quick fifteen-minute team check-in at 9:30ânothing like those marathon Monday meetings we used to have! These are casual, just to see what everyone’s working on. Sometimes they’re in-person, sometimes on video, depending on who’s in the office.
One thing that might take some getting used to is our communication style. We use Slack for most things, and we’re used to getting quick responses. If someone messages you during work hours, they usually expect a reply within an hour or so. But here’s the important partâwe respect boundaries. After 6 p.m., nobody expects immediate responses. We’ve learned that being flexible doesn’t mean being available twenty-four hours a day.
Your First Few Weeks
Now, I know you’re probably not used to our systems yet. That’s completely normal. Most new hires get used to our workflow within about two weeks. You’ll have a buddy assigned to youâsomeone who’ll help you adapt to our way of doing things. They remember what it’s like to be new!
We usually have lunch together as a team on Wednesdays when most people are in-person. It’s a nice routine that helps everyone stay connected. You’ll get used to the rhythm of it all. Some weeks are busier with in-person collaboration, other weeks are quieter with more remote work.
Final Thoughts
The main thing to remember is this: we used to be rigid, now we’re flexible. We used to resist change, now we adapt. And we’re all still getting used to finding the right balance. Some days you’ll prefer being in the office, surrounded by colleagues. Other days, you’ll appreciate the quiet focus of working from home. That’s exactly how it should be.
So take a deep breath. Ask questions. Make mistakesâwe all do. And remember, I used to sit exactly where you’re sitting five years ago, wondering if I’d ever figure this place out. Now look at me! You’ll be fine. Welcome to ACME Corp.
