A Nervous Patient's Journey
1 The Anxious Patient
Bob had been suffering from a severe toothache for weeks before he finally mustered the courage to make an appointment at Smith’s Dental Practice. As he sat in the waiting room, his hands trembling while completing the medical history form, he could hear the distant whirr of a drill from one of the treatment rooms. The sound made his stomach churn.
Dr. Smith, known for his technical excellence but clinical demeanor, was reviewing Bob’s X-rays with a frown. ‘Cavity in the lower molar,’ he muttered to himself, ‘will need a substantial filling.’ His assistant Jane, noticing Bob’s obvious distress in the waiting room, approached him with a warm smile.
‘I can see you’re nervous about your treatment,’ she said softly. ‘Many patients feel the same way. We’ll make sure you’re comfortable with proper anesthesia, and I’ll be right there throughout the procedure.’ Her kind words helped Bob’s shoulders relax slightly.
During the pre-treatment consultation, Dr. Smith efficiently explained the procedure, using technical terms that went over Bob’s head. Jane interjected occasionally to translate into layman’s terms, explaining how the scaling would clean his teeth thoroughly before applying fluoride treatment. She also demonstrated proper flossing technique, knowing prevention was key to avoiding future visits.
