Under exam pressure, even capable students can produce writing that falls short of CAE standards. Common pitfalls include inappropriate register, poor organization, and inadequate task fulfillment. Let’s examine a student response that demonstrates these issues, focusing on how to recognize and avoid such mistakes in proposal writing.
Key Terms

2 CAE Proposal – Poor Writing Example
Task: You are a student representative at your college. Write a proposal to the College Principal suggesting improvements to student facilities. Include information about current problems and explain how your suggestions would benefit the college community.
To: College Principal
From: Student Representative
Subject: Ideas for improving student facilities
Hi there!
I’m writing this proposal to tell you about some good ideas me and my friends have thought about for making our college better. We really need to do something about this.
Current Situation
The college is ok but there’s loads of problems. The cafeteria is always packed and the food isn’t great. Also the library gets super noisy and the computers are really old and slow.
What We Should Do
Firstly we should definitely get some new computers because the old ones are rubbish. Also the cafeteria needs more space and better food options because everyone complains about it.
Benefits
If we do these things students will be much happier and probably study better. It won’t cost too much money I think and everyone will like it.
Conclusion
Basically we really need these changes asap. Please consider my ideas and let me know what you think. Thanks!
Best wishes,
Maria
