Using Have & Get Expressions
Core PathWay
1 π Why Generic Language Fails and Using Specific Have & Get Expressions can help
Using vague language instead of specific expressions with ‘have’ and ‘get’Β can lead to confusion and misunderstandings in everyday communication. When speakers avoid these common idiomatic phrases, their messages often become lengthy, unclear, and less engaging. For example, saying ‘I started to feel uncertain about my decision’ takes longer and carries less impact than using ‘I had second thoughts.’ These expressions are essential shortcuts that native speakers use to convey precise meanings efficiently. Without them, communication becomes wordy and loses its natural flow, making it harder for listeners to follow the speaker’s intended message. This imprecision can lead to miscommunication, particularly in social situations where these expressions help convey emotions and reactions clearly.
2 βCommunication Example that doesn’t use our target terms
I wanted to tell you about the company retreat last weekend. I was kind of worried at first because I wasn’t sure about going – you know how it is when you start feeling nervous about doing new things with people you don’t know well. But then I decided to stop being unsure about my earlier decision to go. I’m really glad I went because I really enjoyed myself a lot! It took me a while to figure out how to do all the team activities – you know, when you’re learning something new and it takes time? But eventually I started to understand what was happening in each situation. Some people were being really bold and saying things that were kind of rude – I mean, who does that? But I guess they made some reasonable arguments sometimes. I had to tell myself to calm down and control my emotions a few times. The best part was when we all got to express our opinions about the company’s future plans – it felt good that everyone could tell others what they thought. I found it really fun and amusing when the CEO tried the obstacle course – watching the boss struggle was entertaining! Looking back, even though some people were acting too confident and saying whatever they wanted, they sometimes made valid points about how we could improve things.
3 π Reflection Challenge
Look at Sam’s email about the company retreat. How could specific have and get expressions make this communication clearer and more natural? Think about which parts seem long-winded or unclear. Where could idiomatic expressions replace the lengthy explanations? Consider how native speakers might express these same ideas more concisely. What expressions would help convey the emotions and situations more effectively? Make notes about which phrases you would change and why before seeing the improved version on page 2 (linked below)
