← Grammar Learning Center>Reporting Still True Situations

When to Keep the Present Tense

When reporting something that is still true at the time of speaking, we keep the present tense in the reported clause. This builds on our understanding of reporting permanent facts, but applies specifically to current situations and states.

Current Situations and States

We use present tense reporting for situations that: 1) were true when first mentioned, 2) are still true now, and 3) will likely continue to be true. This is especially common with living situations, jobs, and personal characteristics.

Context Variations

This structure is particularly useful when discussing:
– Current employment
– Place of residence
– Personal relationships
– Regular habits and routines
– Personal preferences and opinions that haven't changed

Examples

Tom says he works at the hospital. (He still works there)Present tense maintained because employment situation continues
Sarah mentioned she lives near the park. (She hasn't moved)Present tense used as the living situation remains unchanged
He tells me he speaks three languages. (Still true now)Present tense kept for ongoing ability/skill

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Incorrect: She said she was living in Paris. (when she still lives there)

✅ Correct: She said she lives in Paris.

Explanation: Use present tense when the situation hasn't changed

❌ Incorrect: John mentioned he was working for Microsoft. (still works there)

✅ Correct: John mentioned he works for Microsoft.

Explanation: Keep present tense for current employment situations

Tips for Success

  • Always consider if the situation is still true when choosing the tense
  • Use present tense when reporting current habits and routines
  • If unsure, ask yourself: 'Has this situation changed since it was first mentioned?'
