1 Daily Routines and Starting Actions

You have chosen to learn about 15 Phrasal Verbs with GET, let’s get started. We use GET phrasal verbs every day. When you wake in the morning, you get up. This means wake and rise from bed. Sometimes you get out of work early. This means leave a place or vehicle or avoid doing something you don’t want to do. You can say ‘I got out of the meeting by saying I was ill’ or ‘I got out of it’. When you start work, you get down to business. This means start doing something seriously. You can say ‘Let’s get down to work’ but NOT ‘Let’s get down to it work’. After lunch, you get back to your desk. This means return to a place or activity or person.

2 Social Relationships and Emotions

Some GET verbs help us talk about people and feelings. When you get along with someone, you have a good relationship with them. You can say ‘I get along with my boss’ or ‘I get along with her’. When you feel sad or sick, you need time to get over it. This means recover from illness or sadness. You say ‘I got over the flu’ or ‘I got over it’. You can also get on with people. This means continue doing something or have a good relationship with someone. Friends get together to meet socially. You can say ‘We get together every Friday’ or ‘We got together last week’.

3 Transport and Movement

We use special GET verbs for transport. When you travel by bus or train, you get on to enter. You get off when you leave the bus or train. You cannot say ‘get on it the bus’. You must say ‘get on the bus’ or ‘get on it’. For cars and taxis, you get in to enter a car or arrive. You say ‘Get in the car’ or ‘Get in’. Some people cannot walk easily but they get around. This means move from place to place. You can say ‘She gets around the city by bus’.

4 Communication and Problem Solving

These GET verbs help with work and problems. When you get across your ideas, you successfully communicate them. You can say ‘I got my idea across’ or ‘I got it across’. When you finish hard work, you get through it. This means finish something difficult. You say ‘I got through the exam’ or ‘I got through it’. Sometimes people do bad things and get away with them. This means escape punishment for wrongdoing. When you have little money but survive, you get by. This means manage with limited resources. When something is old or broken, you get rid of it. This means remove or throw away something. You can say ‘I got rid of my old phone’ or ‘I got rid of it’.
