Speaking Up in Business Meetings

Core PathWay

1 Starting Your Contribution

You have chosen to learn about business meetings and how to speak in them, so let’s get started. In meetings, you need to show you want to speak. When you take the floor, you start speaking in the meeting. When you have the floor, you are the person speaking now. You can present something to show and explain information to others. You can state your points to say your ideas clearly. You can also raise an issue to bring up a problem or topic. These phrases help you start talking in a professional way.

2 Responding to Others

After someone speaks, you can respond to their ideas. You can agree with someone and say yes to their idea. You can also disagree with someone and say no to their idea. If you want to help an idea, you can support someone’s suggestion. When you see a problem, you can raise an objection to express disagreement or concern formally. You can make a comment to give your opinion or remark. You can also give your opinion to say what you think. Sometimes people debate and discuss different opinions about something.

3 Managing Clarity and Flow

Good meetings need clear communication. Sometimes you need to ask a question to request information from someone. You can clarify to make something clearer or easier to understand. You can summarize to give a short version of main points. Sometimes you need to interrupt and stop someone while they are speaking. After finishing one topic, the team can move on and go to the next topic. These phrases help everyone understand the meeting better.

4 Making Decisions Together

Meetings often end with decisions. You can propose and suggest an idea or plan. The team can vote to choose yes or no formally. After discussion, the group can reach a decision and agree on a final choice. These phrases help your team work together and finish meetings with clear results.
