1 Section 1. What is Real and Important
You’ve decided to explore state verbs — great choice. Let’s dive in. State verbs describe situations, not actions. They talk about how things exist or how they matter to us. For example, a problem can exist in a city. That problem might matter a lot to the people who live there. Sometimes the solution depends on time or money. A good plan must include clear steps. It might also involve many people working together. A traffic light represents a rule we follow. Even when things are hard, some things remain the same: our need for safety and kindness.
2 Section 2. What We Have and What We Owe
Some state verbs talk about having or not having something. If you do not have enough sleep, you lack energy. If you work hard, you deserve a break. When a friend helps you, you owe them a thank-you or maybe a favour. These verbs describe a situation that stays true for a while. Notice we do not use them in continuous forms: ‘I lack money’ not ‘I am lacking money’. This is a key rule for state verbs.
3 Section 3. What We Think and Know
State verbs also show what is in our mind. When you think something is probably true, you suppose it. If you accept something without proof, you assume it. When you suddenly understand something, you realise the truth. And when you are not sure, you wonder about the reason. For example, ‘I suppose she is busy, so I will call later.’ ‘Do not assume everyone knows the rules.’ ‘I just realised I forgot my keys.’ ‘I wonder why the train is late.’ These words help us express our thoughts clearly.
4 Section 4. What Matters to Us Personally
Some state verbs are about our feelings and attitudes. If a noise does not bother you, you do not mind it. If something is important to you, you care about it. And when a topic affects you directly, it concerns you. For example, ‘I do not mind waiting a few minutes.’ ‘She really cares about the environment.’ ‘This decision concerns everyone in the team.’ These verbs show how we relate to situations and people.
5 Section 5. Suitability and Measurement
State verbs can describe how things match or measure. If a time is good for you, it suits you. If clothes are the right size, they fit you. We also use state verbs for numbers: a bag can weigh five kilos; a ticket can cost ten dollars; a table can measure two metres. These verbs do not change over time – they describe a fixed fact. For example, ‘This jacket fits me perfectly.’ ‘The plane weighs a lot.’ ‘A cup of coffee costs about three euros here.’
6 Section 6. Comparison and Relevance
Finally, state verbs help us compare things and say when something is true for a situation. If two people look similar, one may resemble the other. If they are not the same, they differ. And if a rule is relevant to you, it applies to you. For example, ‘This painting resembles a photograph.’ ‘Our opinions differ on this topic.’ ‘The same discount applies to all members.’ These verbs are very useful for describing relationships between things.
