Mountain Holidays: Essential Vocabulary for Your Adventure

Core PathWay

1 Section 1. Getting Ready for the Mountains

Mountain holidays have their own special language. Let’s make sure you can use it. Before you go, you need to think about your equipment. A backpack is a large bag that you carry on your back. It holds everything you need for the day. You also need strong walking boots on your feet. These heavy shoes protect your ankles on rough paths. It is important to bring sunscreen too. The sun is very strong at high altitude. Remember to pack a map and compass so you can find your way. With these things, you are ready for adventure.

2 Section 2. On the Mountain Trail

Now you are ready to walk. Hiking is a long walk in the mountains for fun or exercise. It is a great way to see nature. If you walk for several days, it is called trekking. You follow a mountain trail, which is a path through the mountains. Your goal might be the summit, the very top of the mountain. To get there, you may need to climb using your hands and feet. When you finally get to the top, you can say you managed to reach the top. From there, you can enjoy a scenic view of the valley below.

3 Section 3. Winter Sports and Getting Around

In winter, the mountains are perfect for snow sports. Skiing means moving down a snowy slope on two long, flat boards. Snowboarding is similar, but you stand on one wide board. You can find these activities at a ski resort, a place with hotels, shops, and slopes. To go up the mountain, you use a ski lift, which carries you on a moving seat. Another way to travel up is by cable car, a vehicle that hangs from a wire. These machines make it easy to enjoy the snow.

4 Section 4. Staying Safe and Exploring Nature

Mountains are beautiful, but you must be careful. The weather can change fast, and it is easy to get lost if you leave the path. Always check the altitude and be aware of your surroundings. If you are not sure, take a guided tour with an expert. For a longer trip, you can sleep in a mountain hut, a simple building for walkers. You might see a glacier, a huge mass of ice, or a waterfall falling from a rock. The wildlife, such as birds and animals, is amazing to watch. If someone has an accident, a team called mountain rescue will come to help. They are very important for safety.
