Why So Hot? Speculating About the Climate Crisis

1 Section 1. The Thought Experiment: Why Is It So Hot?

Something has changed. The numbers don’t lie โ€” and the question is: why?

Consider this: according to climate scientists, the ten hottest years ever recorded have all occurred since 1998. More strikingly, the five hottest years on record have all fallen within the last decade. Hot years are not new โ€” there were warm spells in the 1930s and 1970s โ€” but they are arriving faster, hitting harder, and clustering together in a way that was not seen before the late twentieth century.

In the summer of 2023, sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic broke records by such a wide margin that scientists described the anomaly as ‘shocking.’ Wildfires swept through parts of southern Europe, Canada, and Hawaii. Glaciers in Greenland and Antarctica have been losing mass at an accelerating rate. Meanwhile, extreme weather events โ€” intense hurricanes, prolonged droughts, catastrophic floods โ€” have become measurably more frequent.

So here is the thought experiment: if you were a scientist looking at this data for the first time, what would you conclude? Is this a natural cycle? A statistical coincidence? Or is something else going on? The data suggests a pattern, but a pattern needs an explanation. Over the course of this page, you will build the language to speculate carefully and precisely about what that explanation might be โ€” using the grammar of cause, consequence, and probability.

Before we go further, let’s make sure the key vocabulary is clear. These terms will appear throughout the page.

extreme weather event A weather occurrence that is significantly different from normal patterns, such as a severe storm, prolonged drought, or major flood
anomaly Something that is noticeably different from what is expected or normal
accelerating Happening or increasing at a faster and faster rate

glaciers Large, slow-moving bodies of ice that form over many years in cold regions
statistical coincidence When two or more things happen at the same time by chance, not because one causes the other

2 Section 2. Grammar Focus: Present Perfect Simple and Continuous

You already know the present perfect. But here is where it becomes really powerful: when we talk about the climate, we need to connect past actions to present results. The present perfect simple and continuous are the perfect tools for this.

Think of it this way: the present perfect simple focuses on the result โ€” what has happened. The present perfect continuous focuses on the process โ€” how long something has been going on. Both are essential when we want to link human behaviour over time to the conditions we see today.

Focus

  • Present Perfect Simple: have/has + past participle โ€” to describe completed actions with a present result
  • Present Perfect Continuous: have/has + been + verb-ing โ€” to describe ongoing actions that started in the past and continue now, or that have only recently stopped
  • Time expressions: this year, over the past decade, since the 1950s, for centuries, recently, so far โ€” these signal which form to use
  • Cause and result: use the present perfect to show that a past action is directly connected to a present situation

Rules

  • Use the PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE when you want to show that something has happened and the result is visible now. Example: 'Global temperatures have risen by approximately 1.2ยฐC since pre-industrial times.'
  • Use the PRESENT PERFECT CONTINUOUS when you want to emphasise that an action has been happening over a period of time, especially when the action is the cause of a current situation. Example: 'We have been releasing COโ‚‚ into the atmosphere for over 150 years.'
  • Both forms can appear together: the continuous describes the ongoing cause; the simple describes the resulting effect. Example: 'We have been burning fossil fuels for decades, and global temperatures have risen as a result.'
  • Do NOT use the present perfect with finished time expressions: 'In 1980, temperatures rose' โ€” NOT 'In 1980, temperatures have risen.' The present perfect requires a connection to the present.

Examples

  • Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have released over 2.4 trillion tonnes of COโ‚‚ into the atmosphere โ€” and the effects have become impossible to ignore.
  • Scientists have been monitoring Arctic sea ice since the 1970s, and they have recorded a decline of approximately 13% per decade.
  • We have been cutting down forests at a rate of around 10 million hectares per year, which has significantly reduced the planet's ability to absorb carbon.

Common mistake

A very common error is using the present perfect continuous when the result โ€” not the process โ€” is the focus. For example: 'Temperatures have been rising by 1.2ยฐC' sounds as if the rise is still happening right now and the number is not yet final. If you want to state a completed, measurable result, use the simple form: 'Temperatures have risen by 1.2ยฐC.' Save the continuous for the ongoing cause, not the measured outcome.

3 Section 3. Where Do the Probabilities Lie? The Human Factor

The evidence has been building for decades. But how confident can we be that human activity is the primary driver of the climate crisis? The scientific consensus is clear โ€” and the data is compelling.

For well over a century, industrial societies have been burning fossil fuels โ€” coal, oil, and natural gas โ€” to power factories, vehicles, and homes. This process releases carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. These gases act like a blanket around the Earth: they allow sunlight in but trap heat that would otherwise escape into space. The more of these gases we add, the thicker the blanket becomes.

At the same time, we have been destroying the very systems that absorb carbon. Forests โ€” particularly tropical rainforests โ€” function as enormous carbon sinks, drawing COโ‚‚ out of the air and storing it in trees and soil. Since the mid-twentieth century, we have cleared vast areas of forest for agriculture, mining, and urban development. The Amazon rainforest alone has lost approximately 17% of its total area in the last fifty years. As a result, the atmosphere has been accumulating COโ‚‚ faster than natural systems can remove it.

Oceans have also been absorbing both heat and carbon dioxide at an unprecedented rate. Ocean acidification โ€” the process by which seawater becomes more acidic as it absorbs COโ‚‚ โ€” has already damaged coral reef ecosystems across the tropics. Warmer oceans, in turn, intensify tropical storms and disrupt the weather patterns that billions of people depend on.

The scientific community has reached a strong consensus: the probability that natural factors alone could explain the speed and scale of current warming is extremely low. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has stated that it is ‘unequivocal’ that human influence has warmed the climate. In other words, the evidence does not merely suggest a link โ€” it establishes one.

This is not a political argument. It is a question of cause and effect, examined through decades of data, satellite observation, ice core analysis, and atmospheric measurement. The causes are well understood. The challenge now is to talk about them โ€” and about solutions โ€” with the precision and confidence that the situation demands.

4 Section 4. Grammar Focus: Modal Perfects โ€” Speculating About Causes

Now we move into the grammar of speculation. You have the facts. You have the data. But science โ€” and everyday thinking โ€” often requires us to say not just what happened, but how certain we are about why it happened. This is where modal perfects come in.

Modal perfects use a modal verb + ‘have’ + past participle. They let us express different degrees of certainty about past events or causes. Think of them as a dial that goes from ‘almost certain’ down to ‘just possible.’ The choice of modal tells your listener exactly where you are on that dial.

Focus

  • MUST HAVE BEEN / MUST HAVE + past participle โ€” near certainty: the speaker is almost sure this is true based on evidence
  • MAY HAVE BEEN / MAY HAVE + past participle โ€” moderate possibility: the speaker thinks this is possible but is not sure
  • MIGHT HAVE BEEN / MIGHT HAVE + past participle โ€” lower possibility: the speaker considers this a real but less likely explanation
  • COULD HAVE BEEN / COULD HAVE + past participle โ€” open possibility: the speaker is suggesting one of several possible explanations
  • CANNOT HAVE BEEN / CAN'T HAVE + past participle โ€” near certainty that something did NOT happen

Rules

  • Use MUST HAVE + past participle when the evidence strongly points to one conclusion. The speaker is not guessing โ€” they are reasoning from clear data. Example: 'The rapid rise in global temperatures must have been caused by more than natural variation alone.'
  • Use MAY HAVE or MIGHT HAVE + past participle when the cause is possible but not confirmed. 'May have' suggests a slightly higher probability than 'might have', though in everyday use they are often interchangeable. Example: 'The severity of this summer's wildfires may have been worsened by years of reduced rainfall.'
  • Use COULD HAVE + past participle to suggest that something was possible โ€” one of several options. It does not imply the speaker believes it definitely happened. Example: 'The unusual storm patterns could have been triggered by rising sea surface temperatures.'
  • These forms are often used together with present perfect structures to build a cause-and-effect chain: 'We have been releasing COโ‚‚ for over 150 years โ€” this must have contributed to the greenhouse effect we are observing today.'

Examples

  • The fires that swept through southern Europe last summer may have been caused by a combination of record-breaking heat and successive seasons of drought โ€” conditions that have become more common over the past two decades.
  • The collapse of certain coral reef systems could have been accelerated by ocean acidification; scientists have been measuring rising acidity levels for years, and the damage to marine ecosystems has been severe.
  • The speed at which Arctic sea ice has been disappearing must have been influenced by the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the upper atmosphere โ€” no natural cycle alone could account for a loss of 13% per decade.

Common mistake

Many learners confuse 'must have been' with 'should have been.' These are very different. 'Must have been' expresses logical deduction โ€” you are reasoning from evidence to a conclusion. 'Should have been' expresses a missed obligation or expectation โ€” something that did not happen but ought to have. So: 'The temperature must have been unusually high' means you are concluding this from the data. 'The temperature should have been lower' means you expected it to be lower, but it was not. Do not swap these two forms.

5 Section 5. Writing Task: Your Analysis of the Crisis

You have explored the data, the science, and the grammar. Now it is your turn to put it all together. Use what you have learned to write a structured analytical response.

They are the grammar of scientific reasoning: not guessing, but thinking carefully from evidence to conclusion.

Finally, in the writing task, you put all of this into practice: analysing causes, speculating about links, and suggesting how the situation might be improved.

The language you have practised here is not just useful for talking about climate science. Any time you need to connect past actions to present consequences โ€” in business, in research, in everyday discussion โ€” these structures will serve you well. Keep using them.
