1 Telling Stories: Past Simple or Past Continuous?
When we tell stories about the past, we need two tenses.
Past simple is for actions that are finished. We use it for the main events: I checked the runway. Then I wrote a report.
Past continuous is for actions in progress in the past. We use it for the background: The ground crew was working while I walked around.
Read these two short stories. They use the same tenses in different situations.
Business story: Last Monday, I arrived at the office early. The team was preparing for the audit. I reviewed the safety documents while my assistant confirmed the appointments. After that, we had a short meeting.
Daily life story: Yesterday evening, I was cooking dinner when the phone rang. It was my brother. We talked for ten minutes. While we were talking, the food started to burn! In the end, I ordered pizza.
2 Choosing the Correct Form: A Side-by-Side Guide
Why do we choose one tense and not the other? The key is the speaker’s perspective: Is the action a finished event or an ongoing background? Use the rules below to decide.
Focus
- Past simple: completed actions in sequence
- Past continuous: background actions in progress
- When + past simple interrupts while/as + past continuous
- Past continuous describes parallel actions in the past
Rules
- Use past simple for events that happened one after another: ‘I landed, then I walked through the terminal.’
- Use past continuous to set the scene or describe an action in progress: ‘The wind was blowing across the runway.’
- When a short action interrupts a longer one, use past simple for the short action and past continuous for the longer one: ‘I was checking the markings when a plane landed.’
- Use ‘while’ or ‘as’ with past continuous for two actions happening at the same time: ‘The technician was testing the lights while I checked the signs.’
Examples
- The inspector checked the runway markings. (completed event)
- The inspector was checking the runway markings when it started to rain. (interrupted action)
- While the inspector was walking, the ground crew was clearing the area. (parallel actions)
Common mistake
3 Airport Safety Inspection: A Story
Alex is the airport manager. Last Friday, he did his weekly safety inspection. The sun was rising over the runway as he started his walk.
He first checked the markings. A worker was painting a new white line near the terminal. Alex smiled and continued walking. Next, he looked at the signs. A few were dirty, so he wrote a note for the cleaning team.
While Alex was examining the lighting system, he noticed a problem. One of the lights on the left side of the runway was not working. He called the maintenance team immediately. Then he checked the taxiway area. Two ground crew members were guiding a large aircraft into the hangar. Alex made sure there were no obstacles in the area.
At the end of the inspection, the maintenance team was already fixing the light. Alex finished his report in his office. He was satisfied. The airport was safe for operations.
