The present perfect simple is commonly used to talk about life experiences – things you have or haven't done in your life up until now. This is often used with 'ever' and 'never' in questions and statements.

Basic Structure for Life Experiences

Have/Has + subject + ever + past participle?
Have/Has + subject + never + past participle

I've never eaten sushi.Expressing that this experience has not happened in your life so far
She has traveled to five continents.Describing accumulated life experiences without specifying when

Common Mistakes to Avoid

❌ Incorrect: Did you ever visit Paris?

✅ Correct: Have you ever visited Paris?

Explanation: Use present perfect, not past simple, for general life experiences

❌ Incorrect: I never have been to London.

✅ Correct: I have never been to London.

Explanation: Word order: 'never' comes between 'have' and the past participle

Tips for Success

  • Use 'ever' in questions to ask about experiences at any time in someone's life
  • Use 'never' in negative statements instead of 'not ever'
  • Remember that life experiences don't need specific times – they're about whether something has happened or not
  • The experience can be from any point in the past up until now
