Robot Baggage Handlers

This article explores the use of humanoid robots in airports to assist with baggage handling, focusing on whether they offer a real solution to labour shortages or simply avoid addressing deeper issues such as low pay and difficult working conditions.

Learning objectives:
• Students will be able to understand and describe how robots are being used in airport environments using present simple and present continuous passive forms (e.g. are being deployed, is being tested)
• Students will be able to express and justify opinions about technology replacing human workers using common opinion structures (I think, In my view, It seems that)
• Students will learn and use key vocabulary related to work, technology, and labour (physically demanding, deploy, handle, labour shortages, working conditions) in meaningful sentences
• Students will be able to identify and use passive structures, including continuous passive forms, to describe processes and actions where the focus is on the action rather than the agent (e.g. robots are being used, jobs are being replaced)
