1 🎯 Criterion Definition

Today we’re exploring what “COMMUNICATIVE ACHIEVEMENT” really means in Cambridge assessment. This subscale is all about whether your writing does its job—whether it’s appropriate for its purpose, audience, and context. Examiners ask one central question: “Is this writing effective in achieving its communicative goals?”

At C1 level, examiners look for four key elements. First, task conventions: Does your writing follow the expected format for the genre? A letter needs an appropriate salutation and closing; a report needs headings; an article needs an engaging title. Second, register: Is the tone suitable for the target reader? A formal letter to a council should not sound like a text to a friend. Third, audience awareness: Does your writing engage and hold the reader’s attention? A good response makes the reader want to keep reading. Fourth, purpose fulfillment: Are the communicative goals achieved effectively? If you’re asked to persuade, does your writing actually persuade?

The band descriptors clarify what excellence looks like. Band 5 means you use conventions with flexibility, communicate complex ideas effectively, and hold the reader’s attention with ease. Band 3 means you use conventions effectively and communicate straightforward and complex ideas appropriately. Band 1 means you use conventions in generally appropriate ways but only communicate straightforward ideas.

This criterion differs from the other three subscales—Content, Organisation, and Language—because it focuses on the effectiveness of communication rather than the quality of ideas, structure, or grammar. You could have brilliant ideas and flawless grammar, but if the register is wrong, you’ll lose marks here. Many students mistakenly think that fancy vocabulary equals good Communicative Achievement, but actually, it’s about whether the writing works for its intended purpose.

2 COMMUNICATIVE ACHIEVEMENT ❌ Sloppy Writing Example

Task Question:
Your local council has proposed replacing the historic market square with a modern shopping centre. Write a letter to the council expressing your views, explaining why the market square should be preserved, and suggesting alternative development ideas. Write 220-260 words.

Maria’s Response:

Dear Council,

I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposed demolition of the historic market square. It is absolutely essential that we preserve this vital part of our town’s heritage for future generations.

The market square is not merely an old collection of buildings; it is the beating heart of our community. Every Saturday, families gather here, children play by the fountain, and local farmers sell their produce. It’s where we celebrate festivals, where old friends meet, and where newcomers feel welcomed. This sense of belonging cannot be replicated in a sterile shopping centre.

Moreover, the economic argument for the shopping centre is flawed. While it might create some jobs, it would destroy dozens of small businesses that rely on the square’s footfall. These traders have invested years in building their livelihoods. The council should consider renovating the existing market hall instead, which would provide modern facilities while retaining the square’s character.

I urge you to reconsider this proposal. Listen to the people who love this town. Don’t let progress erase our history. The square has stood for 200 years; it deserves better than to be replaced by yet another chain store.
