Mastering Organisation: A Deep Dive into the CAE Writing Subscale
Core PathWay
1 ๐ฏ Criterion Definition
Today we’re exploring what “DESCRIBE THE CAMBRIDGE CRITERIA FOR CAE WRITING EXAM, SUB SCALE OF CRITERIA = ORGANISATION” really means in Cambridge assessment.
This subscale is all about the architecture of your writing. It’s not just about what you say, but how you build your argument. When examiners assess Organisation, they are asking one core question: ‘Is this text well-structured and easy to follow from start to finish?’
Specifically, they are looking at four key areas:
– Text structure: Is the writing logically organized? Does it have a clear introduction, body, and conclusion?
– Cohesion: Are your ideas connected smoothly using appropriate linking words and discourse markers? Does the text flow, or does it jump from one point to another?
– Paragraphing: Are your ideas grouped logically in paragraphs, each with a clear central topic?
– Flow: Does the text move coherently from introduction to conclusion, guiding the reader naturally through your argument?
At C1 level, the expectations are high. For a Band 5 (the highest mark), your writing needs to be a ‘well-organised coherent whole’, demonstrating a ‘variety of cohesive devices and organisational patterns with flexibility’. This means using a range of linking words naturally and effectively, not just ‘firstly’, ‘secondly’, ‘lastly’. A Band 3 (a pass-level mark) requires your writing to be ‘well organised and coherent’ with a ‘variety of cohesive devices and organisational patterns to good effect’. Even at a Band 1 (a low mark), your writing should be ‘generally well organised and coherent’, using a ‘variety of linking words and cohesive devices’.
This criterion is distinct from others like ‘Communicative Achievement’ (which is about tone and fulfilling the task) or ‘Lexical Resource’ (which is about vocabulary). Organisation is purely about structure and flow. It is crucial because even with brilliant ideas, a poorly organised text is difficult to read and fails to communicate effectively. A common misconception is that simply using many linking words is enough. In reality, examiners look for a logical and natural progression of ideas, where the structure itself helps to build the argument.

2 ORGANISATION โ Sloppy Writing Example
Let’s look at a real exam task and see how a student might struggle with Organisation.
The Task:
Your class has been discussing different ways to stay healthy. Your teacher has asked you to write an essay discussing the importance of both regular exercise and a balanced diet. You should write 220-260 words.
Maria’s Response:
Some people think that the best way to stay healthy is to do regular exercise. Others believe that having a balanced diet is more important. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
I think exercise is good. You can go to the gym or run in the park. It makes you feel good. My friend Tom goes to the gym a lot and he is very fit. Also, a good diet is important. You should eat vegetables and fruit. You should not eat too much sugar. I try to eat healthy but it is hard. Sometimes I eat pizza. Pizza is not healthy but it is tasty. In my country, many people are getting fatter. This is a big problem. They should do more exercise. Also, they should eat less fast food. The government should make healthy food cheaper. I think both exercise and diet are important for a healthy life. You need to do both to be healthy. That is my opinion.
3 ๐ญ Reflection Invitation
Before we look at some expert analysis in our next session, take some time to consider:
– Looking at Maria’s response, what specific problems prevent it from achieving Band 5 excellence in ORGANISATION?
– Which elements are missing or inadequate in Maria’s ORGANISATION that need to be addressed?
– What are the most serious ORGANISATION failures you can identify in Maria’s writing?
– How could Maria’s response be improved to demonstrate the ORGANISATION sophistication expected at C1 level?
In our next session, I’ll show you exactly how to transform Maria’s weak ORGANISATION into a Band 5 model response that achieves top marks in this criterion.
