Present Simple for Habits: The Big Picture of Your Life
Core PathWay
1 What Are Habits? The Present Simple Is the Tense for 'All the Time'
A habit is something we do again and again. We do it regularly, sometimes, or often. Habits are the big picture of our lives โ they show who we are. The present simple tense is perfect for habits because it talks about things that are true for a long time, not just now. Think of Jim. Jim is a healthy guy. He does not smoke. He goes running every morning. He eats healthily. He drinks a lot of water. He sleeps eight hours a night. He takes the stairs, not the lift. He walks to work. He does yoga on weekends. He has a fruit salad for lunch. He rarely eats junk food. Now think of Roger. Roger is an unhealthy guy. He smokes ten cigarettes a day. He drinks a lot of coffee. He does not exercise. He eats fast food often. He stays up late every night. He sleeps only five hours. He takes the lift always. He drives everywhere. He never eats vegetables. He drinks sugary sodas.
2 How to Build Sentences for Habits: Action Verbs and Frequency Words
When we talk about habits, we use action verbs โ things we do (or don’t do) again and again. The verb stays the same for I, you, we, they. For he, she, it we add -s or -es. We often add frequency words to say how often something happens.
Focus
- Use present simple for actions that happen regularly, like every day or every week.
- Add -s to the verb for he, she, it (third person singular).
- Place frequency adverbs before the main verb, but after the verb 'be'.
Rules
- For I/you/we/they: subject + base verb (e.g., 'They run every day.')
- For he/she/it: subject + base verb + -s/-es (e.g., 'He runs every day.')
- Frequency adverbs go before the main verb: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never. (e.g., 'She always drinks water.', 'He never smokes.')
- Expressions like 'every day', 'once a week', 'twice a month', 'three times a year' go at the end of the sentence.
Examples
- I walk to work every day.
- She drinks coffee twice a day.
- They never eat junk food.

Roger: I never exercise. I watch TV every night. Sometimes I stay up until midnight.
Jim: I go to bed at ten. I always sleep eight hours. Do you sleep well?
Roger: Not really. I sleep only five or six hours. I drink coffee after dinner, so I can’t sleep.
