Daily Routines: Morning to Night
Core PathWay – A1
1 Section 1. Starting Your Day
Let’s get you fluent in the language of daily routines. Every day starts the same way for most people. First, you wake up. This means you stop sleeping and open your eyes in the morning. Maybe you hear your alarm, or maybe the sun comes through your window. After you wake up, you get up. This is different. Get up means you move your body out of bed. You stand up and start your day. Some people wake up at 7:00 but get up at 7:15. After you get up, you might have a wash. This means you clean your body or parts of your body with water. You can wash your face and hands quickly. Many people also brush their teeth in the morning. You use a small brush to clean your teeth. Then you choose what to wear. You look at your clothes and decide which clothes you will put on today. After that, you get dressed. You put your clothes on your body. Now you are ready to start your day.
2 Section 2. Meals and Cooking
Food is an important part of every day. In the morning, you have breakfast. This is the first meal of the day. You eat breakfast in the morning, usually before work or school. Some people eat bread, eggs, or fruit. At midday, you have lunch. This is the meal in the middle of the day, often around 12:00 or 1:00. In the evening, you have dinner. This is the main meal of the day. Most people eat dinner between 6:00 and 8:00 in the evening. Before you eat, someone needs to prepare the food. When you cook, you make food ready to eat by heating it. You can cook eggs, meat, vegetables, or rice. You can also make lunch or make dinner. This means you prepare the meal. Make and cook are similar, but we often use make with meals. For example, ‘I’ll make dinner tonight.’ Many people also make coffee in the morning. This is a hot drink made from coffee beans.
3 Section 3. Cleaning Your Home
Every home needs cleaning. After you cook and eat, you need to do the dishes. This means you wash the plates, cups, and other things you used for eating. You can wash them by hand or put them in a machine. You also need to clean the kitchen. You remove dirt and make the room where you cook food tidy. You wipe the table and the counters. Another important task is to do the washing. This means you wash clothes in a washing machine. You put dirty clothes in the machine, add soap, and turn it on. When your home is messy, you need to tidy up. You make a place clean and organized by putting things in the right place. You put books on the shelf, clothes in the wardrobe, and toys in the box. In the morning, after you get up, it’s good to make the bed. You arrange the sheets and covers on your bed neatly. A tidy bed makes your bedroom look nice.
4 Section 4. Personal Care
Taking care of your body is important every day. Many people have a shower in the morning or evening. You wash your body while standing under water that falls from above. The water comes from a showerhead on the wall. Some people prefer to have a bath. You wash your body while sitting in water in a bathtub. A bath is slower and more relaxing than a shower. When you shower or bathe, you might wash your hair. You clean your hair with water and usually shampoo. Shampoo is a special soap for hair. Most people wash their hair two or three times a week. Remember, you also brush your teeth at least two times a day, in the morning and before bed. This keeps your teeth clean and healthy.
5 Section 5. Evening and Free Time
After work or school, you have free time. This is time to rest and enjoy yourself. You can relax. This means you rest and do something enjoyable after work or activity. You sit on the sofa, you read a book, or you do nothing. Many people watch TV in the evening. You look at programs or films on television. Maybe you watch the news, a comedy show, or a movie. Another nice way to relax is to listen to music. You pay attention to songs or sounds that you enjoy. You can listen to music on your phone, computer, or radio. At the end of the day, when you feel tired, you go to bed. You get into your bed to sleep at night. Most people go to bed between 10:00 and midnight. Going to bed at the same time every night helps you sleep well. Tomorrow, you will wake up and start the routine again.
